American Somoa is a group of six Polynesian islands in the South Pacific. It became an unorganized U.S. territory in 1900. In March of 1889, a German ship shelled a village in Somoa destroying American property. Continued international rivalries were settled in 1899 when the Treaty of Berlin was signed giving the United States a group of the eastern Somoan Islands. The western islands are now known as the Independent State of Samoa.
