The Virgin Islands is a group of about 100 small islands which are divided into two parts: the British Virgin Islands to the east and north and the United States Virgin Islands to the west and south.  The U.S. Virgin Islands are comprised of 68 islands there are only 3 major islands:  St. John, St. Croix and St Thomas which are poplular tourist destinations.  The capital is Charlotte Amalie and the chief port on St. Thomas, it is one of the finest harbors in the Caribbean.  The islands were purchased from Denmark in 1917 for $25 million because of their strategic position alongside the approach to the Panama Canal.
