~History of Brigantine Beach
The area of Brigantine Beach real estate was once inhabited by the Lenape Indians until Dutch explorers came to search the Jersey coastline for a waterway that would connect the New World to the Orient. Soon, several families began moving to the island.
During the American Revolution, salt manufacturing and shipbuilding were important industries on the island. Whalers used the beach to launch attacks on whales migrating from New England around the same time.
In the late 1800s, many attempts were made to develop Brigantine Beach real estate. In one of these attempts, the island was named North Atlantic City by the Brigantine Improvement Company. The railroad came to Brigantine then to connect the town to Philadelphia with 16 trolleys that ran the length of the island. Hotels began popping up, with some serving as a gateway for important people.
In the early 1900s, the population boom ended due to harsh storms and hard times. By 1917, there were only 54 residents living on the island full-time. In the 1920s, automobiles made it easier for people to come to the island to vacation, which pushed a large scale development to take place. Then, a bridge was built linking Brigantine to Atlantic City in 1924, which ensued a land boom. Soon, Brigantine had its own school, boardwalk, golf course and a lighthouse landmark. The town started adding streets, water facilities and sewage.
The Great Depression, World War II and a couple of bad storms slowed development, but the city bounced back every time. Over time, Brigantine passed through many names - Brigantine Beach Borough, the City of Brigantine City, The City of East Atlantic City and North Atlantic City. The city officially incorporated on March 16, 1924 as Brigantine Beach. The name Brigantine is believed to have come from a type of 1600s ship.
