History of Linwood
Europeans came to the area, once known as Leedsville, in 1695 while on a journey to Burlington. Large tracts of land were then sold and more settlers began coming.
Shipbuilding became an important means of income for the people of the community. The sea soon became an important part of many settlers lives. The first school came to the area in 1800 and was held in the Friends Meeting House. Between 1800 and 1908, five new schools were built.
In 1880, the town of Leedsville became Linwood and Joseph Risely became Postmaster to the newly created Post Office. The Ocean City Railroad Line that was established in 1881 brought about many new changes for the community. Technology came soon after; beginning with primitive candle molds and ending with the electric light. Steam engines and trolleys became an important means of transportation among local residents and visitors. Linwood was officially incorporated in 1931.

Education in Linwood
Linwood's students are served by the Linwood Public Schools, serving K-8, and the Mainland Regional High School, serving grades 9-12. There is also one private school in the city: the Gospel of Grace Christian School, which serves preK-12 grade students.

Linwood is led by a Mayor and a seven member City Council. It is run under the City form of the New Jersey municipal government. The mayor serves four-year terms and the six ward council serve three year terms. The council uses its legislative power by adopting resolutions and ordinances. The council also approves the city's budget and controls all city employee salaries. An appointed administrator is in charge of giving day-to-day activities.
