The beautiful City of Somers Point is mostly a residential community in Atlantic County, just seven miles from bustling Atlantic City and 60 miles from Philadelphia. Linwood and Egg Harbor Township border Somers Point, while there are three bridges that connect Cape May County to Somers Point. Somers Point can be easily accessed by Highway 9 and North Shore Road.

History of Somers Point Originally settled in 1693, the City of Somers Point is the oldest settlement in Atlantic County. The area was once known as Somerset Plantation. The settlement of Somers Point was first incorporated as a borough in 1886, by the New Jersey Legislature. The incorporated borough also included parts of Egg Harbor Township. In 1890, the settlement was reincorporated as a borough, and in 1902, was officially incorporated as a city.
Education in Somers Point Somers Point schools are served by the Somers Point Public Schools and Mainland Regional High School. Somers Point Public Schools serve k-8 students, while Mainland Regional High School serves 9-12 students. There are two elementary schools and one elementary/middle school in the Somers Point Public Schools. Mainland Regional High School is located in Linwood, but serves Somers Point, Northfield and Linwood students.
Somers Point Public Schools are noted for a diverse population that excels in academics and other school activities such as art, music and sports programs.
Private schools in the area include St. Joseph Regional School, a Catholic elementary school, operated by the Diocese of Camden.
Somers Point Local Government The Mayor is elected every four years and is responsible for the welfare, safety, and health of the municipality, as well as city ordinances. The City Council is made up of seven members. All council members serve three year terms except one, which serves a four year term. The council members are responsible for enacting ordinances, setting policy's, and adopting an annual budget for the municipality.
Mayor John L. Glasser is the current Mayor, as of 2008. His term of office will end in 2011.
Things to See and Do in Somers Point Somers Point is in one of the best locations to enjoy many recreational activities. The Great Egg Harbor River bay is very popular with water lovers. It is well known for its fine restaurants, marinas and boating.
