History of Egg Harbor Township Egg Harbor Township got its name from Cornelius Jacobsen Mey. In 1614, during the New World expansion, Cornelius Mey came across an inlet of a nearby river. He found the meadows in the area covered with waterfowl eggs and shorebird, so much that he called it "Eyren Haven", meaning Egg Harbor. The area of Egg Harbor Township real estate was first part of Gloucester County until 1837, when Atlantic County was separated from Gloucester County.
Today, Egg Harbor Township is made up of 75 square miles, of which, a little over 10% is water. The community is bordered to the south by Estell Manor, Longport, Linwood, Pleasantville, Ocean City, Somers Point and Northfield, to the north by Absecon, to the west by Cardiff Township and to the east by Atlantic City.
Education in Egg Harbor Township Egg Harbor Township schools are served by the Egg Harbor Township School District. The district is made up of three K-2 elementary schools, one 3-4 elementary school, two 6-8 middle school, and one 9-12 high school. Each school provides a great education for all students. Egg Harbor Township schools also offer many after-school sports, academic programs and clubs.
When in need of an alternative to public schools, there are two private schools in Egg Harbor real estate. One serves Pre-K through K and the other serves Pre-K through 12th grade.
